  • Women who drink alcohol while pregnant increase their risk of having a baby with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). The most severe form is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), which causes mental retardation and birth defects.
  • According to a current report from the U.S. Task Force on Community Preventive Services, there is little evidence that designated programs actually reduce the rate of drunk driving and alcohol-related crashes, as few designated drivers actually completely abstain from drinking. The report concluded that in a great many instances, the least-intoxicated person is chosen to be the driver, which defeats the purpose of the program.
  • As many women under age 30 are drinking at levels that could be harmful to their unborn children, and because an estimated 45 percent of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned, the babies of those women who do abuse alcohol may already suffer damage before mother discovers they are pregnant.
  • High school students who binge drink alcohol are four times as likely to have attempted suicide, as compared to nondrinkers.
