According to a study that was conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, heavy drinking by college students is prevalent and, among some students, quite frequent; more than 80% of college students reported consuming alcohol in the past year, with more than 40% reporting at least one episode of binge drinking in the previous 2 weeks.
When a person drinks an excessive amount of alcohol in a very short period of time, it is often referred to as binge drinking; this type of drinking scenario is a common cause of alcohol poisoning.
Most wine coolers have the same amount of alcohol as a 12-oz. beer.
The physical symptoms of alcohol dependence include an overwhelming compulsion to drink, the inability to stop or control one's drinking, and the need to drink larger amounts of alcohol in order to get the same effect, which is referred to as developing a tolerance.
