Of the estimated 2.3 million inmates currently incarcerated in U.S. prisons, 1.9 million could benefit from alcohol and drug treatment, but only 11% of inmates who need treatment are receiving it during their incarceration.
Alcohol abuse symptoms tend to alternate between periods of alcohol abuse and abstinence (relapse and remission) over time.
In the past three years, the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento saw a 30 percent increase in children between 12 and 17 checking into the ER with injuries from binge drinking, with higher blood alcohol levels than in the past.
