- Facts on Tap was launched during 1998, and is an alcohol prevention initiative designed to educate and inform students about alcohol abuse and to combat binge drinking on college campuses; this government sponsored program reaches out directly to students across the country and provides awareness materials, technical assistance, and training to more than 800 colleges nationwide.
- Several universities in the U.S. have recently banned alcohol in frat houses and residences that are located on college campuses in response to the high amount of student alcohol overdose deaths.
- An estimated 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage alcohol drinking each year. This includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning.
- Alcohol use can lower levels of folic acid in the body.
